Depending on the intended use, “steel BB” encompasses two distinctly different types of ammunition:
1. Airgun BBs
- Dimensions: These measure exactly 4.3 to 4.4 mm (0.171 to 0.173 inches) in diameter, while weighing roughly 5.1 to 5.4 grains.
- Build: They are made from high-impact hardened carbon steel. To prevent corrosion and reduce friction, they are typically plated with copper or zinc.Â
- Usage: These are strictly used in smoothbore airguns (BB guns) and some standard 6mm airsoft springers designed to fire rigid projectiles. They are strictly for target practice, plinking, or informal shooting—never for hunting live game
